Finally, A Better Way to Prevent Texting and Driving

For over 2 years we at EyezUP have been working on a solution to help prevent texting and driving, focusing on teen drivers.   We wanted to focus on teens because motor vehicle crashes are the number one killer for drivers aged fifteen to twenty, according to AAA.  The biggest reason for the higher death rates is lack of experience while driving and making poor decisions which include texting and driving.

There are even more stats about texting and driving among teens:

  • 94% of teenagers understand the consequences of texting and driving, but 35% of them admitted that they do it anyway.
  • Of all the teenagers ever involved in fatal accidents every year, 21% were using a cell phone at the time of the accident.
  • Teen drivers have a 400% higher chance of being in a car crash when texting while driving than adults.
  • 48% of teens in their younger teenage years have been in the car while a driver was texting.  Over 1600 in the same age group are killed each year because of crashes involving texters.

Obviously, the most important thing we are trying to prevent is injury or death of the teen driver, but of equal relevance is the prevention of death or injury of other drivers or pedestrians on the road.  We have seen many stories of teens going to jail after hurting another person or family. Of smaller importance, but still relevant, EyezUP will help to prevent accidents which increases insurance rates. According to carinsurance.com, premiums go up on average 30%/$453.00 for at fault accidents.  In the states of Minnesota, California, Michigan and Louisiana the rate increase is over $1000.00

When we started developing the EyezUP app we looked around on what other solutions were out there to help prevent the distraction of texting and driving and what we saw was that even though there were a handful of solutions, most of those were about education or giving feedback after the drive had taken place.   We wanted to focus on the actual prevention of texting while driving and we wanted it to be used on both Apple and Android phones. We also wanted to make sure that no external device was needed and that once the parents phone and the child’s phone were connected after an easy connection process, the parents could rest assured that their child wasn’t texting and driving.

We have created EyezUP to help keep all kids safe behind the wheel. EyezUP helps to prevent our young drivers from being distracted by their cell phones and more focused on driving. Of course, emergency situations are considered, and EyezUP handles these exceptions as well. When using the EyezUP app the parent will once more be in control of your kids safety even when they are miles away.
